(B6) CYMATICS
- Cymatics is the study of visible sound vibration
- The most known capture of visual sound is that of the digital waveform which gives a two dimensional image of sound
- This study has given validity to the fact that everything that is a hard object (including the human body) is vibrating continuously at different rates
- German physicist, Ernst Chladni is recognised as the person responsible for developing the Chladni Plate. This is a tool where the user places sand on it while bowing the side to create vibrations. The outcome being intricate, symmetric, geometric shapes.
- Nowadays, people use tone vibration generators and connect them to the plates to create more accurate frequencies and measures.
- Dr Hans Jenny was another who was interested in the study of Cymatics and experimented with liquids and solids, testing the continuous vibrating frequencies.

Chladni Plate being used |
- The patterns created by the processes aforementioned, reveal zero points also known as nodes. This basically means "places where vibration does not exist and where the substance (e.g sand) forms the patterns.
- Dr. Hans Jenny and other scientists later on have found that when playing through a range of tones, there is a moment of chaos in between each tone.
- Visually, the matter is no longer is a perfect geometric pattern but, appears to look more like its original state (sand poured onto a plate)
- This chaos happens when the matter is rearranging itself into a new form based on the new tone
- I really enjoy the geometric patterns created by the Chladni Plate experiments. I wanted to look at these because I was interested in the scale of 'heaviness' between the songs Bradley and I had chosen for the record.
- I did not want to use waveforms as I feel like with sound it is an easy trap to fall into, plus I had made this point for my CoP3 project and still feel strongly about that.
- I think it will be really interesting to play around with the complexities of these patterns to show the scale from soft to heavy Alternative Metal.
- Plus, it is a metal plate used in the experiments and I know Bradley has been using the association of metal music with the material so, it links with his ideas and the genre too.
