(B6) SHAPE MANIPULATIONS (LIQUID EXPERIMENTS)

  • These are my first set of responses to my research on Cymatics. From my initial ideas from the (B1) Talk With Me project, I had used a lot of distortion effects and remembered this ripple effect.
  • I was hoping to use these effects to create a similar outcome as the liquid cymatic experiments by Dr Hans Jenny

  • This did have a similar effect to the liquid experiments however, it has a more symbolistic appearance which I think makes it look like something else entirely
  • I want the designs to have a likeliness to the experiments and these aren't quite doing that
  • These are the same as before however, I used the red and black from Bradley and I's chosen colour scheme and I tried using more organic shapes, to begin with
  • The first one is interesting and I think the negative space around it makes me think of a void that the object is being consumed by which is very similar to my intended outcome but, I still think I could do more with the effect
  • The second one actually looks more like the sand experiments
  • Unfortunately, the ripple effect really did not work for this one and it does not look that dissimilar to the image without distortion
  • Also, there is too much red, after seeing the first one, I think I want to go for a lot of negative space
  • For the penguin books project, I had experimented a lot with grid manipulation and the blend tools.
  • Specifically, I used the blend tool to make a group of lines look like water (the sea) and thought I could use this to show how the water is affected by the vibrations in Dr Hans Jenny's experiments
  • I struggled to make a geometric pattern with the grid but, the lines made an effective pattern whilst also being a more symbol like approach
  • My aim is still to make a digital representation of the Chladni patterns and this is definitely a start
  • I put the shape into Photoshop and added a gradient of purple and red from our colour scheme. I am not sure whether the radial or linear gradient is best
  • It gives a very Joy Division- Unknown Pleasures vibe about it (see blog 'UNKNOWN PLEASURE' SLEEVE DESIGN BY PETER SAVILLE  ). This could be a good thing because it was one of the most iconic album covers of all times and is still widely seen on t-shirts and other merch alike
  • But, it could be a bad thing as it does look too much like this design and I do not want it to get confused with the album
  • These chrome/ plastic wrap effects are what I used for the type of experiments in the Penguin books brief, I was trying to make it look like water the same way I am trying to do here
  • The first two look strange and are too quadrilateral looking to really mimic the experiments but the bottom two are very effective. I think if I did more anchor points in the mesh, it will be almost a perfect imitation
  • I am not sure about the red yet though, maybe it makes it look too plastic with the bright opaque colour?
