(B4) FINAL DESIGNS / OUTCOMES

The typography for the front page came quite naturally after placing the letterforms for 'Earth'. I am glad I used a sans serif font for that because it helps the letters look like the buildings and furthering the association between the buildings and habitable Earth. The typesetting for the back cover was challenging in so many aspects. It would have been much easier if it was a blurb rather than just a list of quotes so, I selected the smaller quotes and placed them in the buildings to make the typesetting for the remaining text more square (less large creep). I do not usually like using central paragraph alignment however, in this case, it benefitted the design because if I had left-aligned the type of the front page I think it would make you think that is where the design ends rather than the whole cover being part of the overall design.

As for mocking the designs up, I went about it the same way as I had with my 'Talk With Me' project. I still do not find making my own mock-ups easy, however, I am finding easier and tidier methods so the design looks professional for my portfolio.

I believe my design met the competition brief set by Penguin Books. They specifically asked for experimental typography and something that makes this book stand out against other books with similar content. This has been considered constantly throughout the project whilst also making sure the design still fits the concept and appeals to its target audience. Penguin also wanted the design to work as a full cover and separately which I believe it does. The front is definitely more obvious however, I still think the shapes are visually recognisable as buildings and water.

If I was to improve anything, I would have looked at satellite altimetry in more depth and read the book too. I feel I might have thought of a more intricate shape-based design as a response. But, I am still really pleased with this design and how the design process leads to it.
