(B1) FINAL DESIGN / OUTCOMES

 CLOSED KIT BOX MOCKUP

  • I tried to utilise the logo again for the main design element for the top of the box. I felt it would be important to note that this is a kit specifically for BPD. I think if this was a successful design in the real world, Talk With Me would be the brand that designs helpful kits for different topics in mental health. We just chose to design for BPD in this project.
  • I was happy to bring back the navy from the first Talk With Me ideation, I think it makes the design really stand out because of the dark and light contrast whilst maintaining the warm comforting tones. It also set a background to build all the mockups.
OPEN KIT BOX MOCKUP

  • I tried to keep the consistency with the open box mockup. I chose to make the disclaimer notice the darker of the warm greys to stand out so it is the first this the user looks at.
  • The drawer was more of an afterthought. I would have placed it in a pouch on the lid but, the disclaimer notice made more sense going there plus, I took inspiration from the Mindfulness Matters Kit, I do not want to make a copy.
  • The drawer works practically because it keeps the zine protected (as it is not a hardcover concertina) and is more of an extra to the kit. In addition, it encourages more sensory engagement, making it more an activity than a chore.
BOX FULL MOCKUP

  • I realised that the mood indicator chart did not have a place with everything in the kit.
  • I decided that it would be placed underneath the bracelets. Whilst playing around with that I remembered why I made the drawer, for engagement, which led me to add the tear seal above the bracelets. I felt it would practically, better secure the bracelets and mood chart and added more colour to the inside of the kit.
  • I have found in other projects that the outcomes looked better if I hand- draw them myself. I am better and drawing a model rather than editing current mockups. The bracelets were difficult to look realistic like the 'shag bands' I got the idea from. Like the other mockups, I drew all of the shapes in Adobe Illustrator and added texture, shadows and highlights in Adobe Photoshop.
  • I really liked Raisa's idea of a tube for the bracelets however, I was not sure how to fit it into the kit. I ended up using the same sort of shape but, built it with cuboids so it would lay flat and save space.
  • The zine was actually my first mockup and probably my favourite deliverable of the whole project. When we had got to the development stage of the project I was worried we would not be able to add type to the designs we had worked hard on producing.
  • Talk With Me allowed us to use the zine and develop it further to help a person with BPD
EMOTION AND SUPPORT CARD MOCKUP - RAISA

  • In a similar fashion, Raisa mocked up the 'Emotion' and 'Support' cards from the kit.
  • I think the messy pile looks good compared to her laid out neat and flat ones. These look more dynamic and fit more with the other mockups.
After the talk given by Angus MacPherson, I really started to think about how I want to present my designs. These mockups are by no means perfect, however, they are something I have never produced before. I hope that by continuing this process and more experimentation, I will get better. Even looking at all the designs together I can see how much I have developed and it has certainly taught me to keep experimenting and to just try it even if I do not think I am capable.

I also found working this way with Raisa was really helpful and proactive. It allowed us to see the progressive development throughout the design process as well as being able to both work on it and see what the other person has been doing (constantly updated the version on a shared drive). This helped combat the issue of time zone differences between us, also leaving notes besides our work to explain the designs to the other person. It is a process I want to maintain even on non-collaborative projects. It really improved our continuity with the designs because everything was together and creating an assets sheet where we just pick the elements needed helped save time.
