HOW TO DESIGN A STREAMING MUSIC SYSTEM - SK REDDY

 READING NOTES

  • Aim of the article is to simplify the complexities of designing and creating streaming systems like Spotify
  • (Psychoanalytic)- Music has an important affect on human beings, calming purposes on children and animals- an emotional impact.
  • 317 billion streams in 2015 on all ongoing streaming platforms at the time
  • In 2016, downloads went down by 10% and streaming went up by 96% and the total world digital music revenue was $6.7billion.
Features found on streaming platforms:
  • Offline streaming where users can download songs onto the platform to listen without internet
  • Radio channels can also be found on streaming services that not only follow music genres but also moods and activities (gym, studying etc)
  • Company curated playlists made available to all users
  • Users are able to share their playlists
  • "Lossless compression: this allows users that download to use less memory without losing quality of the songs
  • Allows users to create their own personal playlists
  • Human curated playlists (picked by music experts, musicians etc)
The rest of the article is not particularly relevant to my essay.
