About this module
Extended practice focuses on the synthesis of self-initiated practical, theoretical and professional concerns within the context of contemporary graphic design practices.
You will be supported to develop independent and strategic approaches to the research, development, resolution and evaluation of a body of work which will demonstrates a deep understanding of your own creative, social, cultural, ethical and/or commercial roles in relation to self determined areas of specialism or vocational interest.
Part one: design practice
You are required to identify, negotiate and resolve a series of design briefs which are appropriate to your individual design practice. A range of briefs should be included in order for you to fulfil all learning outcomes and create a varied and individual body of work, you will be expected to include live, competition and self directed briefs that you have undertaken collaboratively and independently, which should allow you to demonstrate a high level of practical and conceptual design skills informed by a contextual and theoretical understanding.
Part two: project journal
Your blog will be used it to document the Extended Practice module. This will include but is not limited ongoing evaluation and reflection of your progress, documentation of research (practical, theoretical and contextual) undertaken, and a summative evaluation of your project. You will receive a request for confirmation of your blog address shortly.
Assessment
100% portfolio - This will include;
Practical work; design boards, final outcomes and supporting (submitted digitally although may take a physical form)
Paperwork; Statement of intent (digital). Self directed briefs in template (digital) . Written evaluations for each brief (digital) Timetable (digital). Ethics Statement (digital).
Submission requirements
- A series of negotiate design briefs which are appropriate to your individual design practice.
- Evidence of project management ability in the form of a project file (digital).
- To include but not limited to:
- Statement of intent
- Design briefs
- *Evaluation of briefs (see next slide)
- Timetable Ethical statement
Evaluation of Briefs
Evaluation design board: Production evaluation, detail practical considerations if you have not been able to make outcomes physically, how well your outcome met the brief and the audience. This evaluation is a reflection of the work created and working process.
Summative brief evaluations (to accompany studio brief) :
- How did you manage your time?
- What went well and what could be improved?
- What have you learnt?
- This evaluation is a personal reflection.
- A series of design boards that support design briefs.
- Please include an additional design boards which display the final outcome *if appropriate as a replacement for the physical piece. *If your aim was to create something physical but you have not been able to then you can submit digital spreads/versions/pitches or if making a publication you may want to use a platform like ‘Issuu’ etc. You can submit physical mock-ups to support any digital files. Photograph these and label them on blog.
- Blog etiquette: All posts relating to this module must be labelled OUGD603 and with the title of your brief. The posts must have a visible date and time. It is your responsibility to ensure your work is labelled, visible and easily navigable. No changes can be made after your submission is submitted. Ten Briefs Ahead of the Summer you were set the task of compiling ten briefs that you plan to complete throughout the academic year for OUGD603. (to include at least one of each) One competition brief One live brief One collaboration (internal) One collaboration (external) One research led.

- How can you solve it?
- Does it require further research?
- Have you moved on from your initial starting point?
- Methods you are using to document this development?
- What processes will you need to use to develop your work?
- How will you know if it is working?
