(B7) SUMMATIVE EVALUATION

This brief has been surprisingly difficult, when we first started discussing it, we thought it would be a one or two week brief. However, that was not the case as Rhianna thought of different ideas along the way. Kira and I could have probably made suggestions for the promotional material, like the zine, at the beginning of the project. This would have allowed us to set clear objectives from the start and might have helped us avoid the problems we had later on. That being said, clients are unpredictable so, I think having the opportunity to experience that and learn to problem solve and adapt, has taught both of us valuable lessons.

Another thing we realised whilst working with an actual client is, that even though we are taught to follow design principles and a process, it does not always mean the client will correspond with that. For example, it took a lot of negotiating to get to the final logo. Rhianna really wanted the full hand-rendered, chrome type for the logo however, we had to explain how it lacks the versatility needed for a successful logo. Luckily, once Kira shown her the design in context, she understood what we meant. In future the two of us would probably know to mock examples up so the client can see what we mean rather than try and understand a verbal explanation. Sometimes that might not be enough and as designers we are constantly faced with client over design principles.

This has been a good experience for both of us, we have had first hand experience on working with a client and understanding that we see design far differently to some of the people we will be working with. I realised how important the model The Futur devised for how to talk to clients, was for graphic designers.
