(B5) GOTHIC ILLUMINATIONS

I was pleased with this illumination however, it took far too long to design and the clarity of the illustration was lost completely once reduced in size for the zine. It also didn't conform with the other illustrations present within the zine as they were all heavy with linework and this has shading.

  • The font 'Angel wish' was used for the illuminated letters which is a font inspired by Blackletter (a prominent font in the peak of the Gothic style). I decided to keep it minimal because the entire zine is structured this way and it would look out of place otherwise.
  • The lettering with the white fill was very stark and made it harsh to look at considering all of the body text and heading type is narrow and light rather than bold
  • I also did not like how the letter appeared to be floating so I drew a rectangle around it which added more structure to the design
  • I made it fit into the text so the header can remain just above and gave the letter an empty fill and white 0.25mm stroke to make it less abrasive
  • I thought this worked very well and once again added to the finer details that the zine was lacking in
  • This is also similar to the symbols within the text in 'Buildings Views' book
